This DOE graphic shows why we can't turn off fossil fuels like a switch. Oil is intricately woven into our everyday actions. I want us off ff as much as anything but the reason why we need to be aggressive but careful is in this graphic. We need to have a portfolio of responses since we have a portfolio of ways fossil fuels are involved in modern life.

ASU researcher builds a mechanical tree to capture carbon dioxide The tree is a pioneering effort by Klaus Lackner, a sustainable engineering professor at ASU who has spent over two decades researching carbon capture and storage technologies. Lackner estimates the tree is 1,000 times more efficient at absorbing carbon than a natural tree.

“The day where we need (carbon capture technologies) is now. As a matter of fact, it was 10 years ago,” he said.

Within the next decade, Carbon Collect expects to install Mechanical Tree™ farms globally. This large-scale plan will cover 0.8 to 1.2 square miles per farm. According to Lackner, “Two hundred and fifty large scale Mechanical Tree™ farms have the capacity to capture one gigaton (A gigaton equals one billion metric tons.) of CO2.”
