America needs clean electricity. These states show how to do it. To search for ideas about how to decarbonize electricity, let’s turn to the states with the lowest carbon intensity. To be clear, electricity generated in one state is often exported to others, so we will only show electricity generation, not consumption. As you can see in the charts below, these six states make a lot of electricity with hydroelectric dams and nuclear power plants.

The states that make the cleanest power

Vermont, Washington, Oregon, New Hampshire, South Dakota and South Carolina.
